Why The Village Taphouse Doesn’t Have a Kitchen (And Why West Bedford Is Better for It)
We get asked this all the time at The Village Taphouse.
“Why don’t you have a kitchen?”
It’s a fair question. A lot of taprooms follow the same formula: open the doors, build a pizza kitchen, and keep everything under one roof.
But we made a different choice. And it was intentional.
The Village Taphouse is based in Bedford, Nova Scotia, located in the West Bedford Plazas, and we chose a community-first approach that makes the whole neighbourhood stronger.
The real reason: we chose cooperation over competition
When we first planned the Taphouse, we could have built a pizza kitchen like many taprooms do. It’s a proven model. Craft beer and pizza belong together.
Then we learned a pizza shop was opening just a few doors away.
At that point, building our own competing kitchen stopped making sense. Not because we couldn’t do it, but because we didn’t want to.
Why go head-to-head with a good local business when we could support them instead?
West Bedford works better when local businesses work together
West Bedford is growing fast. That’s exciting. But growth can either create a connected local scene, or it can create a strip of businesses all trying to cannibalize each other.
We wanted the first option.
Instead of trying to do everything ourselves, we focused on what we do best:
- great craft beer
- cocktails and premium spirits
- a strong non-alcoholic selection
- atmosphere that feels adult, welcoming, and relaxed
- weekly events and community programming
- genuine hospitality
Then we made food easy.
How it works for guests: great beer, great pizza, zero hassle
No kitchen does not mean no food plan.
It means you can enjoy the best of both worlds. You get your drinks, you get your table, and you can order great pizza and other local options right to your spot.
That keeps the focus where it should be: on your night out.
You’re not stuck with a limited menu. You’re not paying restaurant markups for something that’s better made next door. And you don’t have to leave to eat.
You stay, you relax, and your food shows up.
Why this choice has paid off for everyone
This decision has turned out to be one of the best things we could have done, for three reasons.
1) Guests get more choice
Instead of one kitchen with one menu, you get access to multiple local options. That means groups can mix and match, which is exactly how real nights out work.
2) Neighbouring businesses get support
We’re not siphoning away revenue from the people around us. We’re helping keep the plaza ecosystem strong. That’s good business and good community.
3) West Bedford gets a more connected scene
When local businesses support each other, the whole area becomes a destination. More people visit. More people stay longer. More people discover the neighbourhood.
That’s how scenes are built.
The Taphouse is a tapHOUSE, not just a tapROOM
We use the word tapHOUSE on purpose.
We’re more than a single-product stop. We’re a gathering place, an events hub, and a community room that happens to have an incredible beverage program.
Not having a kitchen gave us the freedom to invest even more into:
- rotating taps and local discovery
- cocktail quality and consistency
- service and guest experience
- events that bring people together in West Bedford
The result is a place where you can come for one drink or stay all night, with food options that don’t force you into one lane.
A better pairing than pizza and beer
Craft beer and pizza will always be a perfect match.
We just believe community-minded cooperation is the better pairing.
Because when we support the businesses around us, we’re not just building a bar. We’re building something that lasts, for the whole neighbourhood.
Come visit The Village Taphouse in the West Bedford Plazas. Grab a craft beer or cocktail, order pizza to your table, and experience the kind of local scene that’s built on collaboration.
